Nothing AWKWARD to report here

Opeth is my current obsession. I have been neck-deep in their discography since November. I can’t really seem to listen to anything but them right now, they’re THAT good! Cusp of Eternity is the on their 2014 album, Pale Communion. It was the first song of theirs that grabbed me. The album itself is a departure from the sound that they are known for- but it was MY first taste of Opeth, and thus my gateway into their earlier, HEAVIER stuff which I now love even more than this. On a side note, I hate when diehard fans of music groups give you shit for “just discovering” their longtime kickass band. It doesn’t happen much, but when it does happen it is pretty awkward, and you can be sure that the fan who is hassling you lives in his parents’ basement, and gets very little action from the opposite sex (or same sex, if that’s the case [because they’re usually still in the closet]). There are countless awesome bands out there! For every fifty bands in the world that suck, or are mediocre, there is ONE that will absolutely blow your mind. If you do the math, that still equates to more music than a person can listen to in their lifetime. No one can be expected to know of EVERY kickass band in existence. So, you’re not at fault for not being aware of a particular band from their moment of inception. Somehow the radio seems to overlook these types of bands. Therefore, I see no shame in recently coming across an old band, and getting into their back catalogue…Like Opeth.

Having said all of that, you will definitely see more Opeth on this site. It’s not a matter of “if” but a matter of how much, and how often. Do yourself a favor and take the journey starting with this song. Like all good music, the Pale Communion album took a few listens to really grab me. I think I started to get that warm, Off The Hook, vibe around the third listen. PC kind of sounds like it came from the 70’s with the all spooky organs and whatnot (yeah, I said “spooky”). I would recommend listening to this song a few times this week to see if it has the same effect on you. If so, you could be in for a real treat! Although I like their heavier stuff more, I can’t deny that without this song, and/or album, I would have probably chalked Opeth up to just another cheesed-out heavy band that I didn’t have time for.   I am glad that my friend insisted that I give this album a few spins. Once again, I stand by my conviction that European metal crushes American metal! Opeth is living proof of that. They hail from Sweden. This song doesn’t really back up my position, as it isn’t heavy. You’ll just have to take me at my word. Opeth’s earlier stuff is death metal, but this album is far from that. I think the term “death metal” gets a bad rep, but I’ll save that for another day. It’s funny, because Pale Communion is still classified as “death metal” even though, in my opinion, it’s not even heavy enough to be considered “hard rock.”   This serves to back up Rusty Fish Hook’s paranoid theory that categorizing music by genre is the government’s way of keeping demographics separated. In fact, isn’t that what that Offspring song was about? Anywho, give this track a listen. See if you don’t get HOOKED.

How about some Mastodon reviews? Like Opeth, the hardcore metalheads will say only their old stuff is good, but if you hear The Hunter (especially Black Tongue, All the Heavy Lifting, and Spectrelight), or Once More Round the Sun (Tread Lightly, Black Tongue, Chimes at Midnight), you will see that they have actually gotten better each album.
I like your style of writing so I am curious how adroit your reviews will come out for such an awesome band like Mastodon.

Not sure if you’re seeing this, G, but you have successfully gotten me back into Mastodon! The Hunter is a Masterpiece album!! So is Crack the Skye, but I like The Hunter better. Gracias, Amigo

To your earlier comment: Still Life and Watershed are my two favorite Opeth albums. But yes, they are ALL good! To your Mastodon comment: Looks like you have given me some homework. Mastodon is a group that I respect, but I don’t totally love. I have been exposed to some of their stuff, but it hasn’t touched me in all the right places. Leviathan was my first taste, then Crack The Skye, then Blood Mountain. Of those three I liked Crack The Skye the best. I will be checking out The Hunter next, per your suggestion. Have you heard Killer Be Killed (Troy Sanders along with Max Cavalera and Greg Puciato)? Good shit. Thanks for reading and for complimenting my awesome writing!

Opeth rocks. Anything they put out is great, heavy or not. Ghost Reveries and Still Life are my favourites but this is a good song.

You should try Nightwish. They’re Finnish metal, and I actually enjoy them. They did a crazy movie just to make an album (I think? ). I dunno. Hit up will for the actual info. He’s the music guy.

Love them Finns. As soon I can get over this Opeth obsession I will check out Nightwish. I tried to come up with something clever to say about them, but Rusty Fish Hook came up shooting blanks. #Awkward #awkwardstuff #offthehook
